John, his brother Josh, and two other group members decided to give it a try. It sounded like the kind of adventure John came for. The spelunkers told John they had to suck in their stomachs to pass. When the group came to an area known as the Big Slide, another group of spelunkers told them about the Birth Canal area. John, his brother, and friends explored the cave for about an hour, entering through the Blowhole entrance. Another 16-year-old working as a lead cave guide also became stuck in the cave for over 10 hours after he entered a vertical cave upside down.
In 2001, two boy scouts became stuck inside an area of the cave and were rescued after spending over 12 hours upside down. In 1999, two teenagers became stuck in the Birth Canal. They continued to explore the cave, curious what they could discover inside.Īlthough no fatalities had been reported at the cave by 2009, several people did become stuck in the cave, requiring emergency rescue assistance to save them. Thrill-seekers were not deterred by this information. As soon as spelunkers crawled into the hole, the cave immediately dropped 4.6-meters. Warning signs posted at the entrance of the Nutty Putty warned spelunkers of its dangers. Officials stated they one day expected a fatality at the cave. Even the most experienced spelunkers could not make it through the passageways. This causes excessive smoothing of the rock inside the cave, which further narrowed the already narrow passageways. Since its opening, more than 25,000 people explored the cave each year. It soon became a popular spelunking site known for narrow passageways, twists, turns, and narrow squeezes so tight that some were marked impassable by humans.Įach area of The Nutty Putty had a distinctive and very appropriate name based around its design the Aorta Crawl the Maze the Scout Eater and the Birth Canal were among the areas of the cave.
